Black
areas represent switch positions: a switch is up (ON) when the black
area is up, and a switch is down (OFF) when the black area is down. To set the
eight switches to a particular value, first choose the value from the chart
below, 0 to 255. Then set the eight switches to match the binary pattern to the
left of the value. 1 means UP and ON; 0 means DOWN and OFF. In actuality, this
is nothing but simple binary counting. If you understand binary numbers, you
shouldn't need the chart. Please study the
example and read the text below.
DIP Switches are often used in computers and electronic devices to select or deselect certain features, or to select a value for something. DIP stands for Dual-Inline-Package which simply describes how the pins are arranged on the package, in two inline rows. The DIP Switch illustrated here contains eight individual on/off switches. The eight switches may be set to any one of 256 possible patterns. For convenience, all the 256 patterns are included below. Each value is represented both in binary form (1 's and 0's), then with the corresponding actual value. The binary values relate directly to the way the individual switches should be set. A 1 indicates that the switch for that corresponding position should be ON. A 0 indicates that the switch for its corresponding position should be OFF. When all the switches are OFF, then the value is zero. When all the switches are ON, the value is 255. When switches 1 and 2 and 5 and 6 and 8 are all OFF, and switches 3 and 4 and 7 are ON, then the value is 50 as in our example above.
If the value set on the switches represents time in one-tenth second increments, then to set the time to 5.0 seconds means that the switches must be set to a value of 50, for 50 tenth seconds. Set to 100 for 10 seconds. If time increments are full seconds, then a value of 20 on the switches represents 20 seconds; a value of 200 represents 200 seconds.
